Nashville (1975)

Nashville is often cited as Robert Altman’s best film, and that is probably because it is the best example of his trademark style of using an ensemble cast, tangential but intertwining subplots, and overlapping dialogue. Altman’s idea of having the actors write and record their own songs from the perspective of their characters was a good idea, and a few of the songs are quite nice, especially “Since You’ve Gone,” by the fictional trio Tom, Mary and Bill. But the fact that the almost all of the songs are show in their entirety seems to open the gaps between interaction of the characters a little too widely, and makes the movie a bit too long. But there are moments in the film that are great, and Lilly Tomlin is excellent as a singer raising two deaf children, and racked with guilt over a one-night stand.
